Getting started

What do I need?

A Mac with macOS 26 Tahoe or later, and a USB cable that carries data, not only charge.

How do I set it up?

Follow the install guide. It takes 2 minutes.

Where did PhoneMount go?

It lives in the menu bar as an eject icon, with no Dock icon. No icon? Open it from Applications. On a MacBook with a notch, a full menu bar can hide it, so quit another menu bar app to make room.

Which devices work?

Anything that connects over File Transfer (MTP). A device that shows up in Finder by itself does not need PhoneMount.

  • Kindle (2024 and later): plug it in and unlock it.
  • Nintendo Switch: System Settings › Data Management › Manage Screenshots and Videos › Copy to PC via USB Connection. Use the console's own USB-C port, not the dock.
  • Meta Quest: put on the headset and allow access to files.
  • MP3 players: choose MTP if there is a USB mode setting.
  • Garmin: plug it in.

My device does not appear

Is it set to File Transfer?

Android starts in charge-only mode every time. Tap the USB notification and choose File Transfer (on Samsung: Transferring files). No notification? Try another cable, plugged straight into the Mac.

Is it unlocked?

Unlock it, and tap Allow if it asks “Allow access to phone data?”. Missed it? Unplug it and plug it back in.

Stuck on “Mounting”

Unlock it and tap Allow, then click Mount in the PhoneMount menu. No Mount button? Unplug it and plug it back in.

“Another app may be using the device”

Only one app can use a device at a time. The PhoneMount menu names the app and offers Take Over. Otherwise quit Android File Transfer (and its Agent, in Activity Monitor), OpenMTP, MacDroid or Smart Switch, then unplug it and plug it back in. Still stuck? Restart the Mac.

“PhoneMount is switched off in System Settings”

Go to System Settings › General › Login Items & Extensions › File System Extensions and turn on PhoneMount. Already on? Quit PhoneMount, open it again, and if that fails, restart the Mac.

“The device didn't answer”

Same for “stopped responding”. Unlock it and check that File Transfer is selected. Then plug it straight into the Mac, not through a hub, or try another cable.

“Choose where devices should appear”

Click Choose Folder next to the device in the PhoneMount menu. If macOS will not mount there, pick another folder in Settings.

Using it

Can I just unplug it?

Yes, unless Finder is still copying. Then wait, or eject first. If Eject does nothing, close any file you have open from the device.

A new photo is missing

Leave the folder in Finder and come back.

Copying many small files is slow

That is normal. The device registers each new file separately, so thousands of small files take longer than one large file.

Where are my WhatsApp files?

On internal storage, in Android › media › com.whatsapp › WhatsApp › Media.

Licence

What is free?

Opening and copying files off your device, always, and writing the first 1 GB to it. A licence makes writing unlimited. If Finder says the disk quota is exceeded, your free 1 GB is used up.

How do I activate my key?

Click Activate PhoneMount in your key email, on your Mac. Or click the PhoneMount icon in the menu bar, then •••, then Enter Licence Key, paste the key and click Activate.

How many Macs can I use?

Up to 3, with the same key. Moving to a new Mac? Choose Remove Licence in Settings on the old one. A Mac unused for 60 days stops counting by itself.

Does it need the internet?

Only to activate the key and to check it now and then. A Mac that stays offline keeps its licence for up to 30 days, then goes back to the free allowance until it can check again.

I lost my key, or mistyped my email

Email [email protected] with your receipt from Link and we send the key to the right address.

What is LINK.COM* on my statement?

That is us: it reads LINK.COM* VORASDIGITAL. PhoneMount is sold through Link (by Stripe), and Voras Digital is the company that makes it. Your receipt comes from Link, and the key in a separate email.

Can I get a refund?

If PhoneMount does not work with your device, email [email protected] within 14 days of purchase for a full refund.

“This licence key has been cancelled”

The key was switched off, for example after a refund. If that is a mistake, email [email protected].

Are updates free?

Yes. PhoneMount checks once a day and asks before installing. To check now, choose Check for Updates in its menu.
